With her unique background and a passion for empowering women, Sharon stands out as a contestant in the African Most Beautiful Pageant. In this interview, Sharon shares her personal journey, her dedication to women empowerment, her cultural pride, and her aspirations to make a positive impact on the world. See end for details on how to vote.

Question: What is your name and tell us a bit about yourself?

A: Hi there, my name is Sharon Muwanguzi. I am a social worker and skincare specialist with Ugandan-American heritage. I was born in the United States to parents who immigrated from Uganda, which has given me a strong connection to both cultures.

Question: What unique qualities do you believe you bring to the African Most Beautiful Pageant that set you apart from other contestants?

A: My unique background, which combines both African and American heritage, distinguishes me from others. Participating in this pageant holds great personal significance for me as it centers around the empowerment of women. I stand out from the other contestants because I have overcome my own insecurities and have become an empowered woman.

Question: In a world that often places a strong emphasis on physical appearance, how do you define true beauty, and how do you embody it?

A: I believe that true beauty extends far beyond just physical appearance. It's all about looking good, feeling good, and doing good! First impressions are important, but it's also crucial to value inner beauty, like kindness, empathy, and patience.

Question: As a representative of Uganda, what aspects of your personal style and fashion choices do you believe showcase your individuality and cultural heritage?

A: I adapt my personal style and fashion choices to suit different situations, while consistently aiming to incorporate and showcase my cultural heritage. I frequently enhance my outfits by incorporating African headwraps or integrating traditional African tops into my everyday attire.

Question: The African Most Beautiful Pageant aims to empower women. How have you actively worked towards empowering yourself and others in your community?

A: Currently, I have the wonderful opportunity to be closely involved with my undergraduate school, Lesley University. I enjoy sharing my wisdom and knowledge with junior students, helping them along their academic journey. In addition, I have the wonderful opportunity to connect with immigrants through my work in social services at the Cambridge Women's Center and the Lowell Transitional Living Center. There, I provide support and empowerment to marginalized communities, making a positive impact in their lives.

Question: How do you plan to use this platform to raise awareness about important social or environmental issues that are close to your heart?

A: Family values and the reunification of immigrant families hold a special place in my heart, and I am committed to utilizing my platform to advocate for and accomplish these important goals. I intend to make environmentally conscious investments in Uganda, specifically by planting shea butter trees for my upcoming skincare line. The objective of this approach is to generate employment opportunities while ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

Question: What steps have you taken to cultivate self-confidence and resilience, and how do you plan to inspire other young women to do the same?

A: Miss Cameroon, who was a contestant in last year's pageant, encouraged me to participate in this year's event. I'm so inspired by her! My plan is to cheer on young girls and women, encouraging them to step out of their comfort zones and become the absolute best versions of themselves. Trying new things is super important because you never know unless you give it a shot!

Question: In a globalized world, where cultures often blend and merge, how do you celebrate and preserve your Ugandan identity while embracing diversity?

A: I love being part of the Ugandan community in the US because it helps me stay connected to my cultural roots! I've had such an amazing time growing up in a Ugandan household and getting to share my culture with people from all walks of life. It's been such a rewarding and enriching experience! I also learn from my wonderful Ugandan friends who have more experience living in Uganda than I do.

Question: Can you share a specific talent or skill you possess that you believe will captivate and leave a lasting impression on the pageant judges and audience?

A: I'm proud to say that I have a variety of talents! I love to sing, dance, write poems and skits. I'm also known for my meticulous approach to every project! I'm excited to showcase my captivating skill performance for the judges and audience! Mark your calendars for July 29th at The Claridge Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Can't wait to see you there!

Question: Beyond the pageant, what are your long-term goals and aspirations, and how do you see yourself making a positive impact on the world?

A: My long-term goals are all about making a positive impact on society! I want to be a valued member of our community, and I also dream of becoming an entrepreneur. One of my biggest passions is creating more opportunities for marginalized communities. I imagine myself making a wonderful difference by empowering people, standing up for fairness, and promoting inclusivity all around the world.
