According to an article in The Oxford Companion to British History by A.S. Hargreaves Mothers` Union was an Anglican Church of England women`s organization, founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, wife of a Hampshire rector, originally as a parochial body aiming to uphold ‘the sanctity of marriage’ and to nurture young families in a Christian environment.
Having developed into a diocesan organization by 1885, it spread rapidly, launched its own journal, formed a central council (1895), and was granted a royal charter (1926); the first overseas branch was founded in 1897. It now operates throughout the Anglican Communion, admitting spinsters, men, and divorcees, and continues to promote stable family life, with active involvement in many social concerns.
The commemoration of Mothers' Union Day has become an established practice in all Anglican churches around the globe.
During the Mothers' Union Day celebrations at the All Saints Anglican Mission Church of Uganda in Boston, Nalongo Roselyn Biingi Kawiso, president of married women in Namirembe Diocese, encouraged her fellow married women to work diligently and offer assistance to those who need it. Quoting 2 Thessalonians 3:14, she implored everyone to exhibit empathy for their friends and associates, especially the underprivileged, sick, and impoverished, as they commemorated the day. She was accompanied by her dear husband Ssalongo Julius Biingi.
Miss Ruth Lukyamuzi, who heads the mothers' union at All Saints Anglican Mission Church in Boston, USA, called on parents to be vigilant in ensuring their children receive proper upbringing by showing them affection and nurturing them into responsible individuals, beginning from home.
According to her, the appropriate way to raise children is to set a good example in behavior, attire, eating habits, and particularly through being involved in prayer with them. It is essential for both the mother and father to encourage their children to attend church and to display love that will nurture and not harm them. Encouraging children to pray and instilling in them a love for prayer is crucial, because God never fails. Therefore, families and children were advised to remain steadfast in prayer.
The head priest, Reverend. Doctor. Emmanuel Kiwumulo, told people at the All Saints Anglican Mission Church in Boston to welcome Jesus in their lives, especially now because the lent period is almost over. He spoke of celebrating Jesus' coming to Jerusalem and asked that Jesus come into our lives and marriages during this time of change. He mentioned how some people have spouses in Uganda while they are in America, but God can fill the emptiness in our hearts and renew our spirits. He also said that everyone who embarks on a spiritual or marital journey should pray without ceasing.
