Many times when people talk about Africa rising, it's about technology or economy but this time , we take time off to celebrate another one of the many wins Africa is stacking in the global entertainment industry. A young enthusiastic and creative brain behind some of the most exceptional movies on the continent Loukman Ali is the man in the spotlight.
Africa magic viewers’ choice awards held in Nigeria on Saturday was yet another platform for Ali to prove himself beyond any shadow of a doubt as a creative giant and a refined artiste in the film industry. The most prestigious awards in the African film industry saw Ali grab the two most contended for awards all over Africa. Having perfected his art and executed it wonderfully, the movie Brotherhood set in Nigeria entails two brothers that end up on opposite sides of the law after hustling and trying their best to survive in Lagos city. Despite not being physically available for the function, Loukman was able to bag two of the best awards of the night, best Director and best cinematographer for the Brotherhood movie.
Ali has developed a remarkable ability to achieve a high level of creativity and expertise in the field of film production. The very first Ugandan movie on Netflix “The girl in a yellow jumper” got the world over asking, ‘who’s this guy?’, yep the opening credits weren’t anything cliché like "A Guy Ritchie Film” but Africa’s very own Loukman Ali.
And we gotta give it to the man, watching “The Girl in a Yellow Jumper” will give you all the chills as the thriller’s concept vividly gets executed telling a story through the lense of an African director. Undoubtedly, the movie was a classic and received the recognition it deserved, thanks to the dedicated filmmaker who consistently surrounds himself with a skilled and successful A team, including notable folk like Michael Wawuyo and Usama Mukwaya.
The movie got such a huge audience and positive reviews; The director gave it his all, Loukman couldn’t have done more than he gifted us. It tells a good Ugandan culture especially in regard to our conversation follow and the fact that it does talk about our history as well as some renown musicians. I love the fact that it was something that wasn’t dragged but a tale of, “I took my time to give too this.” Thank you Loukman and your crew said Winterds Wilbers in a review. This movie did scoop an ‘Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice award upon its release in 2018.
The movie went ahead to win five awards in various categories such as Best Director of cinematography(Naizi Nasser), Best Actor in a Leading Role(Michael Wawuyo Jr), Best Editor(Loukman Ali), Best Sound(Quad A), and Best Visual Effects(Loukman Ali).
Trust Ali never to disappoint when it comes to short film concepts as well. Surely after setting the bar too high he can’t soar any lower than that. Loukman Ali bagged a prestigious a ward-Best Short Film for “Sixteen Rounds” .
He made Africa proud and we can’t wait for more of such great work to be shown more on Netflix, and adopted to the different movie streaming sites. After receiving the awards on behalf of Ali, Mathew Nabwiso another sensational movie act in the African film industry went on to comment saying, “The awards were a resounding success, and we managed to secure two victories for Uganda in the categories of Best Cinematography and Best director both attributed to Loukman Ali.”
As Africa keeps rising in different areas, we need to recognize and celebrate all these wins as we stack them up and keep the creatives in different fields motivated and energized to keep perfecting their craft, because the rewards are inevitable.
